Rick Hendrick had a feeling that the pairing of crew chief Steve Letarte with Dale Earnhardt Jr. might work.
He liked the personality of Letarte, who demands an all-in attitude from his driver but also has an outgoing personality that breeds faith and trust.
Hendrick figured that personality, combined with Earnhardt Jr.’s need for confidence and to feel comfortable with his crew chief, would pay dividends.
The successful team owner didn’t need to see anything on the track to know that his plan worked.
He could hear it in Earnhardt Jr.’s voice during a race, when he gave Letarte great feedback.
And what he saw off the track made him know he had made the right move.
